The owners of this home in the north-eastern suburb of Kingsbury wanted a double-storey extension that reimagined the existing structure, provided additional space and created a strikingly modern aesthetic.

Designed and built to be in distinct contrast to the original building, the extension introduced a bold, contemporary look while also improving the use of limited front yard space.

The brief was to create a second living area and add a luxurious master bedroom suite, while keeping the footprint efficient and fully utilising the land available. To achieve this, the extension was built to the side boundary with a minimal setback from the front boundary.

The original house featured traditional materials: brick veneer external walls, a tiled roof and timber subfloor construction. The extension used similar solid cream bricks, added new materials to create a modern look.

These materials included colorbond standing seam cladding, rendered parapet wall and brick piers as well as a metal roof and aluminium windows. This delivered a clean, architectural finish, while the use of matching bricks created flow between the existing and new structure.

On a practical level:

• The extension has created an additional, generously sized ground-floor living area.
• Upstairs, a spacious master bedroom with an ensuite and walk-in robe makes a peaceful retreat, separated from the living areas for added privacy.
• The updated layout delivers additional space and elevates the flow and functionality of the house.
