Home Extension & Renovation, Balwyn
Location: Balwyn
Region: North East Suburbs of Melbourne
When: 2025
The owners of this home in the north eastern suburb of Balwyn wanted an extension to the rear that used the existing building materials to respect the original 1970s structure and delivered more light, space and functionality for modern family living. Local home extension builders Mastercraft Construction were engaged to design and remodel the existing dwelling to be comfortable and modern.
Set on a sloping block with an east-facing rear yard, the existing home was built on concrete strip footings with solid double brick walls and a terracotta tiled roof. The brief was to design and build a modern addition to the home that felt like it had always been there. To achieve this, one practical and cost-effective step was to reuse bricks and roof tiles from the existing extension to the rear of the home.
The completed home extension project added a study, butler’s pantry, open-plan kitchen, and family dining area, with northern highlight windows to draw in natural light. The main living space opens to a generous timber deck that captures eastern and northern aspects.
Inside, polished solid timber floors flow from the original home into the extension. The stunning new kitchen features cabinetry with stone benchtops and splashbacks, while floor-to-ceiling tiles have created a classy, contemporary bathroom and ensuite.
Alterations to the existing layout converted the former lounge into a master bedroom and the study into a walk-in robe and ensuite. This work took place alongside renovations to the laundry and main bathroom of the existing home for a new lease of life.
Project highlights:
- Reuse of original solid red/blue bricks and terracotta roof tiles
- Rear extension with new study and butler’s pantry
- Open plan kitchen and family dining area

The extension and alterations to the existing home have created a light-filled modern family home while maintaining its original character, utilizing the block’s slope and orientation to rejuvenate this once tired 1970’s Balwyn home.
